The Lipstick Plant gets it's name from the distinctive flowers they produce which look, unsurprisingly, like tubes of lipstick! They'll be happiest in bright indirect light, slightly higher humidity and should be watered when the foliage starts to wrinkle.

Spring/Summer Autumn/Winter
Can tolerate medium light but are more likely to flower in bright indirect light.
Medium to bright indirect light.
Water when the foliage starts to wrinkle and lose it's plump appearance.
Cut back on watering in the winter months.
Prefers warmer temperatures and higher humidity but will be fine in average household levels.
Try to avoid any drastic changes in temperature - keep away from cold draughts and central heating.
Feed once every couple of weeks throughout the growing season. Do not feed in Autumn and Winter unless the plants is still actively growing.

Scientific Name: Aeschynanthus 'Mona Lisa'

Family: Gesneriaceae

Origin: Asia

Toxicity: Non-toxic to humans and animals.

Soil: Standard potting soil mixed with perlite, or equivalent, for good drainage.

Repotting: It's best to repot at the beginning of Spring when the plant has become rootbound - once every two years or so.

Propagation: These can be a little hit or miss - for the best chance make sure your cutting has a node and pop them in damp soil or a jar of water until they root. 

Common problems: Higher humidity can lead to fungus issues, and make sure to keep an eye out for mealy bugs!

Care Tips: Good air circulation will help to keeps pests and fungus at bay.

Fun Fact: Aechynanthus are epiphytes, meaning they grow on other plants and get most of their nutrients from the air and rain!
