Dioscorea elephantipes are very unusual plants. Named after their half buried, tuberous stem that resembles the foot of an elephant. The base can reach a width of 3 metres and 1 metres in the wild.
These are a choice for the plant lovers, they are rare and require a little more thought when it comes to care. Regular watering required when green shoots are present. When the shoots die back the plant goes into a state of dormancy, at this point it is recommended to cut back watering until a new shoot appears.
The base likes to be in partial shade to shade and the shoots like to in partial light or direct sunlight.
