Bird of Paradise plants provide an instant tropical feel with their huge and very photogenic leaves, and once mature they can produce spectacular flowers! They'll be happiest in bright indirect light and should be watered when the top inch or so of soil has dried out.

Spring/Summer Autumn/Winter
Bright indirect light - can tolerate some direct morning or afternoon sun.
Winter sun isn't as strong to they can handle a little more direct light.
Water when the top inch or so of soil has dried out.
Cut back on watering in the winter months.
Prefers warmer temperatures and higher humidity.
Try to avoid any drastic changes in temperature - keep away from cold draughts and central heating.
Feed once every couple of weeks throughout the growing season. Do not feed in Autumn and Winter unless the plants is still actively growing.

Scientific Name: Strelitzia nicolai

Family: Strelitziaceae

Origin: South Africa

Toxicity: Toxic to humans and animals.

Soil: Standard potting soil mixed with perlite, or equivalent, for good drainage.

Repotting: It's best to repot at the beginning of Spring when the plant has become rootbound - once every two years or so.

Propagation: These can be propagated by root division when repotting the mother plant.

Common problems: Overwatering can easily cause root rot and yellow leaves, and be careful of too much direct sunlight burning the leaves!

Care Tips: Rotate the plant every now and then to ensure even growth.

Fun Fact: These plants can develop splits in their foliage in order to allow light to reach the lower leaves!
